Facing Reality at 48: Why I Took an "Internship" Packing E-Commerce Boxes
It all started with a simple intention: helping out a friend who runs an e-commerce business. I picked up packing boxes like an intern. In the end, it turned into an experience that taught me more than the last 20 years of my tech career combined.
From 1996 to Today: The Digital Comfort Zone
My journey with tech began in 1996 in the computer labs of Marmara University, when I first encountered the internet. Since then, I’ve been involved in hundreds of software projects. For my generation, technology was a privilege; it meant easy career opportunities and a comfortable lifestyle well above average standards.
In 2019, I made the leap to migrate to London. For five years, I enjoyed a rewarding and comfortable role as a Product Manager at a health-tech startup birthed at City University London (Thomson Screening - SchoolScreener at Noveva Software Group). After the company was acquired by a private equity firm, I transitioned into launching my own consulting practice, G2M Partners, where I continue to represent several Turkish tech enterprises in the UK market.
Yet, I was reminded once again: learning and growth have no ceiling.
Hands-on Operations vs. System Integrations
For the past few weeks, my mornings from 9:00 to 11:00 AM were spent in a warehouse doing physical labor—packing orders. From 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, I switched back to my tech roots, building system integrations across Amazon, Shopify, eBay, and Sage.
After decades behind a desk, this dual experience was nothing short of transformative.

Egoless Learning (A Fantastic Internship at 48):
Having worked remotely for the past 7 years, I realized how refreshing physical work and in-person social interaction can be. Stepping away from the screen to work alongside people reminded me of the simple joy of building real-world workplace relationships. Step out of your bubble and talk to people!
True Frontline Discovery:
You cannot build impactful AI solutions from an ivory tower or solely behind a computer screen. By physically preparing those shipments with my own hands, I experienced the true bottlenecks of multi-channel order fulfillment, inventory management, and shipping logistics. Innovation doesn't happen at a desk; it happens on the frontline.
AI: Cutting Through the Noise to Find Reality:
Today, everyone claims to be an "AI Expert" or runs an "AI Agency." Setting up a basic RAG framework or paying the first enterprise ChatGPT invoice seems to prompt leaders to declare themselves "AI Transformation Champions." But AI’s real impact isn't found in a complex tech stack—it lives at the critical intersection where digital software meets physical operation.
